The Falcons and Patriots made history in this year's Super Bowl 51. It looked like the Falcons had it in the bag, but the Patriots won it in the first overtime ever in Super Bowl History! After the game my partner Eric and I saw Falcons fans posting on social media in favor of the Falcons after their huge loss. We saw this as an opportunity to dig a little deeper. We were curious about why fans that lose would still follow that losing team. We decided to talk to fans of losing teams, particularly of the Falcons and the Redskins. After talking with some fans of perpetually losing teams we came to a few conclusions.
Family and Geography played apart in why a fan stays loyal to their team in general.
For a person to really be a solid fanatic of a losing team there needs to be a defining moment that emotionally connects the fan.
There is an identity piece underlying and driving a fan's loyalty to a team.
